The 2009 ASP World Title race is between Mick Fanning and Joel Parkinson. The season title winner will be determined at this final event of the season, the Billabong Pipeline Masters (North Shore of Hawaii). The Pipeline Masters has an event window that ranges from December 8th – 20th, 2009.  Last year the season title had been decided before the last event of the 2008 season.  Kelly Slater was the 2008 Pipeline Masters winner and the 2008 season title winner.  Pipeline is a wave of consequence.  Local surfer Timmy Reyes sliced his head open in the ASP 2008 Pipeline contest.

Andy Irons - Pipeline December 2009
Andy Irons - Banzai Pipeline 2009 - ASP World Tour
The entire North Shore of Oahu had been experiencing 20-40 foot waves in the days leading up to the 2009 contest.  Although Round 1 was not considered "Classic Pipeline", the waves were hollow.  It was a barrel fest.  The longest barrel rides produced the biggest scores.  Some sick barrel rides were served up by Gabe Kling, Andy Irons, Bruce Irons, and Shane Dorian.  Bruce Irons and Shane Dorian also made it through Round 2 before the day was over.

Sunny Garcia showed up late for his heat and literally tugged at a competition singlet, trying to get into his heat. Sunny was denied access to the heat but remained at the contest tent attempting to negotiate his way back into the event.  Sunny Garcia was leading the Van`s Triple Crown series and had also come in 3rd place in the recent Eddie Aikau specialty surfing event a couple of days ago. Ultimately Sunny Garcia was given the 1st runner up position on the alternates list.  Torrey Meister was the alternate that took Sunny Garcia`s place in the event.

Prior to the 2009 Pipeline Masters event, the 2009 Eddie Aikau surfing contest ran in 20-25 foot Waimea Bay.  The 2009 Eddie Aikau specialty event was won by Greg Long.  Kelly Slater came in 2nd place at the Eddie Aikau contest.

Teahupoo Irons - Tahiti 2010
Andy Irons - Tahiti 2010 - ASP World Tour

The waves shrunk down to 2-3 foot going into the final day of the 2010 contest.  The barrels were a bit scarce.  Heat 1, of Round 4, Dane Reynolds lost out to CJ Hobgood .  Adriano De Souza allowed Tiago to take off on  wave that ultimately cost him the heat, in Round 4.  The waves started to improve and build in size throughout the day (Hitting up to 5ft).  Adrian Buchan (Ace) caught a clean barrel and earned  a 9.7 score in Heat 6 of Round 4.

By Heat 3 of the Quarter Finals Kelly Slater had earned a 10 point ride with a late eagle drop into the barrel, where he crouched through a long barrel and blasted out the hatch.  Andy Irons won his Semi-Final heat against Kelly Slater and opted out of his interview with GT (webcast athlete interviewer).  Andy chose to get back in the water and prep up for the Finals.  Andy then went on to win the contest and $50,000.00 in prize money.

We would like to make a special notation about Patrick Gudauskas.  Patrick had one of the best waves of the contest (Round 3) by pulling of a complete rodeo flip.

Heat 15, of Round 2, Kekoa Bacalso lost out to Matt Wilkinson .  Then in Round 3 Dane Reynolds again displayed some impressive barrel riding.  Dane also pushed the limits in round 3 by attempting a rodeo flip.  This was a true attempt too.  The rodeo had a complete rotation, although he barely missed the landing strip.

Round 2 and Round 3 were also significant as many of the World Tour competitors were cut for the season.  This is not a typical practice although ASP made significant judging, format, and Board of Director changes this year.  ASP decided to make these changes by mid-season 2010.  The World Tour field has been permanently reduced to 34 from 45.    The new line up of 34 will consist of 32 World Tour competitors plus 2 wildcards.  Cuts due to the new changes and minimum performance requirements took out Kekoa Bacalso (2009 Rookie of the Year), Tanner Gudauskas, and Tommy Whitaker.  All competitors that did not make the cut will maintain their season points and will be able to augment their standing by competing in Prime Events and Star Events.

The contest was on hold for the first 7 days of the contest window due to small surf.  The contest finally got underway on August 30th but there was some sort of web page or technical issue that caused the webcast to not be available in sections throughout the Southern California (USA).  At first we thought it was our computers, but one of our customers sent us a cached Google link that held the correct IP address or DNS information for the webcast.  The Google link worked, Yeah !  Heat 8, of Round 1, had a controversial interference call against CJ Hobgood.  CJ never dropped in and was quite a bit down the line as well.  Jordy Smith had actually been the competitor drop in on Manoa.  I recommend taking a peek at the heats on demand to get a look for yourself.  I would compare it to a recent call at the US Open (non world tour event) that allowed Brett Simpson to hinder Julian Wilson.  Then in Round 2 Dane Reynolds displayed some impressive barrel riding samples.

Bobby Martinez won this event in 2009.  This is the 10th year that the World Tour has included Teahupoo.

The 2010 US Open of Surfing ran the Finals on 8/8/2010.  Jordy did not seem committed to any of his decisions early in the heat. The huge Huntington crowd could have played a roll in the momentum.  Either way, Brett took advantage of it.  With less than perfect surf, Brett used his local knowledge to gracefully navigate the challenging conditions to victory.

The 2010 US Open of Surfing ran the Round of 16 on 8/7/2010.  In the Round of 6 there were 2 men in each heat.  The 1st and 2nd place competitors in each heat advanced.  Competitors (Jadson Andre, Nate Curran, and Brett Simpson) in the Round of 16, pulled off a variety of aerial maneuvers.

Today Hurley had a couple of sky divers parachute onto the beach.  There was also a jet-ski assisted tow-in exhibition (WPS All-Star Expression Session).

The US Open (WQS / Prime Event) can provide entry into an upcoming 2010 World Tour Event at Trestles, California.  The US Open provides a unique opportunity to see local rippers and amateur surfers compete against World Tour competitors.  World Tour competitors are motivated to compete at the US Open, in Huntington Beach, for a number of reasons.  The reasons include the challenging conditions, to experience the level of the local surfers, win an increasing prize purse, earn points toward the new ranking system, and to gain media exposure.

The 2010 US Open of Surfing ran the Round of 24 on 8/6/2010.  The contest wave size hit 2-3ft today with some improvement on the shape.  In the Round of 24 there were 3 men in each heat.  The 1st and 2nd place competitors in each heat advanced.  Competitors in the Round of 24, Dane Reynolds, Jadson Andre, and Kelly Slater, confirmed that aerial maneuvers will be part of professional surfing contests going forward.  I would definitely have to say that Dane Reynolds displayed the most unique and impressive aerials of the day.  I am dubbing Dane Reynolds as The Doctor (DR).

I asked Jadson Andre and Dane Reynolds what surf spot they would like to see added to the World Tour (The US open is not a World Tour Event).  Jadson Andre indicated that he would like to see Maldives added to the World Tour.  Maldives is a sovereign string of islands located off the south coast of India.  In addition to having good surf, the Maldives is also known as one of the first countries that could be submerged by global warming / rising sea levels.  Dane Reynolds said that he would like to see Bolsa Chica added to the World Tour (humorously).

The day also featured Skateboarding, BMX, and a Teen Fashion show (Walk-The-Walk).

The day (Thursday) actually began with a few remaining heats from the Round of 96.  The contest wave size remained small today.  In heat 23 of the Round of 96, Brett Simpson seemed to get away with an interference against Julian Wilson.  Competitors (Dane Reynolds, Owen Wright, and Kolohe Andino) in the Round of 96 today also gave up some air moves.  The 2010 US Open of Surfing ran the Round of 48 on 8/5/2010.  In the Round of 48, the 1st and 2nd place competitors in each heat advance.  The Round of 48 also produced some noteworthy aerials via Miguel Pupo, Jadson Andre, and Owen Wright.

The 2010 US Open of Surfing ran the Round of 96 on 8/4/2010.  The contest surf remained small but cleaned up and began to cooperate.  In the Round of 96 the 1st and 2nd place competitors in each heat advance.  Heat 7 produced some creative air maneuvers.  Nate Yeomans pulled off a floater air re-entry and then shot the pier.  Then Cory Lopez busted a 180 air the remaining rotation in the landing process.  Nate and Cory continued to pump out critically vertical moves. In Heat 8, Jadson came out quickly with a strong wave that included a reverse air.  Jadson, later in the heat, attempted one of the biggest aerials of the day.  Answering back was Damien Fahrenfort who shot the pier.

ASP webcast quality was excellent for the Round of 96.

The 2010 US Open of Surfing ran the Round of 128 on 8/3/2010.  The contest opened up with small surf.  The waves were a bit wally giving way to a soft section with a possible reform, common conditions for Huntington.  In the Round of 128 the 1st and 2nd place competitors in each heat advance.  Heat 9 produced some big air in small waves.

ASP boasted about making history by producing multiple simultaneous webcasts for this event.  The event is running up to 27 different video cameras as well.  Although surfing webcasts by ASP have been one of the most significant contributions to the sport, the webcast was having some problems and went down a few times throughout the day.  Please encourage ASP and MKM to better support web media on-site (maybe set up a 2nd press area for web media organizations?).
