New York Cancelled, Santa Cruz Confirmed

Quiksilver and the ASP (Association of Surfing Professionals) recently announced that the Quiksilver Pro New York will not be returning to the East Coast of the U.S. in 2012. In 2011, the Quiksilver Pro New York marked the 6th of 11 events on the elite ASP World Title Series.

"The 2011 Quiksilver Pro New York event was a huge success for the surfers and fans with great conditions and incredible support from New Yorkers." said Rob Colby, President of Quiksilver Americas.

World Tour New York Cancelled

"It is unfortunate that we announce the cancellation of the 2012 Quiksilver Pro New York,” Dave Prodan, ASP International spokesman, said. “We understand the factors leading to Quiksilver’s withdrawal of the New York event from the 2012 schedule.” ASP did not respond to a Trade Federation request for specific reasons leading up to the cancellation.

However, the O’Neill Cold Water Classic Santa Cruz has been confirmed for 2012 as an elite ASP World Title event.

Renato Hickel, ASP World Tour Manager, said. "Santa Cruz offers a variety of world-class waves for our surfers to perform on and we’re hopeful that conditions will deliver for the world’s best to do battle in."

Next year’s status as a returning elite ASP World Title event coincides with the 60th anniversary of the O’Neill family’s contribution to surfing.

"We are excited to see a World Tour level event return to Santa Cruz as part of O`Neill`s 60 Year anniversary," Pat O’Neill, President & CEO of O’Neill Wetsuits, said. "Mainland surfing started in Santa Cruz, Jack O’Neill developed many pioneering surf inventions here and it’s been home to the O’Neill brand for over half a century. With a World Tour event in 2012 and the possibility of the World Champion being crowned, we expect to see an exciting chapter in surfing history written right in our front yard."

As an ASP event for over three decades, the O’Neill Coldwater Classic was championed by California standouts such as Tom Curren and Bobby Martinez from Santa Barbara, Kieran Horn, Adam Replogle and Nat Young from Santa Cruz, Richie Collins from Newport Beach and San Clemente’s Nathan Yeomans.

Surfing the World Tour

On December 27, 2011 ASP announced they will deactivate the Midyear Rotation for 2012.

Dave Prodan, ASP International spokesman, stated "We believe that the 2011 rotation brought in some incredible talent that proved they deserved to be amongst the world’s best with their performances throughout the back half of the year. However, the instability of the ASP schedule (especially in 2012) makes the concept very difficult to manage. Where would we schedule the rotation? How do we ensure there are fair and balanced opportunities in every rotation for surfers to qualify? As we have been since our inception, we are a sport governed by the surfers for the surfers and it is in this spirit that we have voted to deactivate the midyear rotation in 2012. We believe this decision is best for the upcoming season and we will continue to discuss the future of the rotation within the sport."

"The midyear rotation worked out better than we could have imagined this season, but looking ahead, the surfers feel that it will not have the long-term effects desired for the sport," Perrow said. "This is felt by the majority of the surfers from the very top of the ASP Top 34 to the qualifiers in the Prime and Star events. What we have created is a system in which the very best surfers in the world are currently within the ASP Top 34, but the process of getting there is becoming disorganized. We don’t want that and the decision to not have the midyear rotation in 2012 is the best thing for the sport."

Vans Pipe Masters
ASP World Tour Event
Pipeline, Oahu, Hawaii
December 8th, 2011 - December 10th, 2011

The Pipeline World Tour event is one of the most prestigious events in professional surfing. The Pipe Masters events is part of two distinct competition series that overlap. It is the last surfing event in the Triple Crown of Surfing and the last World Tour event of the year. The event is scheduled during a time frame that is typically known for receiving the biggest ocean swells at a location that is known for the some of the world's largest waves, Winter time at the North Shore of Hawaii. The 2011 Pipe Masters had an event window that spanned between December 8th and December 20th, 2011. This year the event was able to be completed in the first 3 days of the event window.

The waves on the first day of the competition were huge and a bit wally. Round 1 began in 12-15 foot surf in sunny weather and a bit of light wind. There was a huge crowd in attendance. A lot of pin-tail surfboards were in use. In heat 4, Bruce Irons went over the falls on a huge wave. Travis Logie ended up beating Bruce Irons in heat 4. Kai Otton pulled off a good barrel at the beginning of heat 5. Later in heat 5, Kai Otton pulled into a nice barrel but the lip clipped his head and knocked him down. Ian Walsh pulled into a close out barrel and broke his board but he headed back out to the line up with a backup board. Ian Walsh went on to win his heat. Then the action picked up in heat 8. Jamie O'brien, who lives right next to Pipe, started off heat 8 with a double barrel. According to one of the webcasters, the biggest board Jamie uses at pipeline is a 6' 11". Dane Reynolds opened up his account, in heat 8, with two low scoring close out waves. Jamie won the heat by the time the horn sounded out. In Heat 9, Laurie Towner dislocated his shoulder. Laurie came to the beach in the middle of the heat and had his arm reset and paddled back out for one more wave. Later in heat 11, Tanner Gudauskas also suffered a board loss when a giant wave landed on the board. Coco Ho was on the beach for the contest and watched her brother Mason win his heat in round 1. In round 2, John John Florence collected a few barrels including a single wave with a double barrel ride that earned him a perfect 10 and a heat win against Kai Barger.

On day two of the event, Round three produced more insane action. Backdoor was not opening up much in round 3. Most of the waves were coming through at Pipeline and Gums with an average wave height of 10-12 feet. John John Florence again shredded Pipeline and won his heat. Kelly Slater had his leash ripped right out of his board in his heat, but won his heat against Marcus Hickman. Kelly Slater used a 5' 11" surfboard which is considered a small surfboard for huge waves and pipeline. Tahitian Michel Bourez won his heat in round 3 as well. Michel said that it you have to paddle harder to get into Hawaiian waves compared to Tahitian waves.

Kieren Perrow Pipe Masters Hawaii
Kieren Perrow - Pipe Masters 2011

On day 3 of the competition, the waves were about 6-8 foot and junky. Local boy Jamie O'brien barely lost to Joel Parkinson in his quarter final heat. Then Kelly Slater faced John John Florence. Kelly Slater chose to ride a 5' 6" surfboard. John John dominated the first half of the heat. With less than 9 minutes in the heat, John John took off going left into a backdoor barrel and came out of it. That wave looked un-makeable and earned John John a 9.70 score. Then Kelly Slater matched the backdoor wave with his own successful barrel. John John gave up priority to answer back again with another great backdoor wave. Then Slater battled back with another backdoor wave. It was a punch for punch heat all the way to the end of the heat. With controversial / questionable scoring by the judges, Kelly Slater won the heat.

By the time the final heat started the waves had dropped to about 5-6 feet in height. The final heat was set to run 35 minutes long. The contest pushed forward with Kieren Perrow being crowned as the winner of the Pipe Masters contest. The Pipe Master is not only a World Tour event but is also part of a 3 contest Hawaiian series known as the Triple Crown. John John Florence did not win the Pipe Masters event but earned enough points to win the Hawaiian Triple Crown of Surfing. John John is the youngest surfer to ever win the Triple Crown. Congrats to both surfers for their epic performances.

On 11/15/2011, ASP released the 2012 World Tour Schedule. The World Tour series is at the top of the professional surfing circuit. Competitors battle in Star Events and Prime Events in order to gain access into the prestigious World Tour of Surfing Series. Major world tour contest sponsors for 2012 include Quiksilver, Rip Curl, Billabong, Volcom, and Hurley. The schedule gets a little hectic during the months of September and October.

The 2012 ASP World Title Series schedule will not include the Rip Curl Pro Search that has been part of the world tour schedule in recent years.  The search event is expected to return in 2013.

"We are taking a year off from the front line of running the event and putting a solid 18 months into the planning of the 2013 Rip Curl Pro Search. To take the Search to the next level is always the goal. We do that every year, but following San Francisco and the twist it delivered to the surfing world we feel we need more time and care to really blow minds," said Rip Curl`s Neil Ridgway. "In that time we have had everything from ASP world titles to underworld rip offs, terrorist alerts to perfect tubes, great personal and professional difficulty and epic celebration parties. This event more than any other combines the discipline of professional sport with the traveling lifestyle and freedom surfers love. It needs to be nurtured so it grows better than ever. A year tending to it in planning is the right way to develop it."

2011 Ocean Beach - Gabriel Medina

The 2011 World Tour event in Ocean Beach, San Francisco produced some large waves and historic action.  The contest wave size was a solid 3-5 foot plus. The conditions ranged from good to tricky. The water temp was very cold. Just days before the contest began there was also a shark attack at the same beach. Kelly Slater was entering the contest with enough points earned to grip his 11th world tour title sometime during this event, with one world tour event still remaining.  The intensity was at an all time high.

On the first day of the competition (11/1/2011) Rippers like Kelly Slater, Adriano De Souza, and Gabriel Medina won their heats. Dusty Payne exited the contest after spotting a shark in the line up. "I was sitting out there and saw something in the lineup,” Payne said. “I’ve seen dolphins before and that wasn’t a dolphin. That’s the biggest fin I’ve ever seen in my life and it came straight for me. The waves are terrible so I just opted to stay in instead of deal with the shark.".

Then on 11/2/2001 ASP makes a historic calculation error. ASP announced that Kelly Slater had won the 2011 season title prematurely. Kelly Accepted the honor only to have it taken away. Kelly Slater went on to officially win the title on 11/6/2011.

By the end of the contest, it was Brazilian surfer Gabriel Medina that won the Ocean Beach World Tour event 2011. Gabriel Medina is only 17 years of age but has been earning respect on the World Tour.

2011 Ocean Beach - Kelly Slater - ASP False Season Victory Photo

On 11/2/2011, The Association of Surfing Professionals (the governing body for professional surfing) announced that Kelly Slater had won the 2011 World Tour of Surfing Season championship title (and Kelly Slater's 11th World Title win). The announcement came during the 2011 World Tour event in Ocean Beach, San Francisco.

Amongst other statements made, Kelly Slater said "I think 39 is actually pretty young to most people, I guess in the past, you would top out once you hit 30, but that’s definitely not the case now. I feel like I’m surfing at the highest level of my career and I feel like I can keep going. I haven’t thought about it too much, but I plan on relaxing for the rest of the year and enjoying my time in Hawaii. We’ll see what 2012 brings to the table."

On 11/4/2011, ASP admits to a calculation error related to Kelly Slater season title victory. "Our rankings’ system is designed to split tie-breaks based off of seed points," Renato Hickel, ASP World Tour Manager, said. "Kelly (Slater) and Owen (Wright) tied at best nine of 11 results, so we went to best eight of 11 results and the system gave it to Kelly based off his higher seed position. We were operating under that assumption and created the ASP World Title scenarios based off of that. This was a mistake. In the end, we’re responsible for this and should be held accountable. We apologize to our fans, the surfers and to Owen and Kelly."

Then on 11/6/2011 it really happened.  Kelly Slater finally won the 2011 season title and his 11th world tour season title to date.  Kelly Slater had some words for press.  "It was a confirmed the other day, but we’re sure now, I’m stoked. I was upset about it, but I also thought it was really funny. There are no hard feelings towards ASP and mistakes happen. It’s easy to point things out. It was a little tough to readjust and I was going against kids who could be my kids and they throw radical airs. I was hoping for big offshore barrels, not closeout onshore ramps. I just didn’t know what to expect out there. I didn’t know if we’d have air sections and it was kind of flat with a lot of power. The waves were closeouts and fast with a weird landing." Slater went on to say "It’s a little anticlimactic, I texted my mom, because it’s funny because I didn’t really have the emotion the other day. This is my profession and it’s a little on me to know the situation and it’s not just everyone else’s fault. There have been a few of these mistakes over the course of history, but this one was a bit weird, but I called Renato (Hickel) in the morning after I won because I was supposed to do this Dan Patrick show and I hadn’t won yet. I knew we wouldn’t surf for a day or two so people could get it out of their system and I could have a few days to refocus."

Although Kelly Slater earned enough points to seal the season title, he did not end up winning the event taking place at Ocean Beach. Gabriel Medina, on of the younger competitors on tour, powered his way to the World Tour event at Ocean Beach the very next day (11/7/2011).

Then two days after the contest was completed (11/9/2011), ASP CEO Brodie Carr submitted his resignation. Brodie Carr served as CEO, to the Association of Surfing Professionals, for 6 years.  Brodie Carr made the following public statement with his resignation "It is my duty to accept responsibility for the recent calculation error that resulted in the premature crowning of Kelly Slater’s 11th ASP World Title. The determination of the ASP World Title is the most important moment in professional surfing. Ultimately, the responsibility for every activity within ASP lies with me. Therefore, I have elected to resign my position as CEO." Richard Grellman, Independent Chairman of the ASP Board, will temporarily act as Executive Chairman while a global search for a new CEO is undertaken.
