In addition to winning this contest, Jordy has also pulled ahead of Kelly
Slater in the chase for the 2010 season title. Jordy remained humble
about this advancement. “That`s cool but there’s still a long way to
go,” Smith said. “Kelly (Slater) may have lost today but he won’t be out of
the title race until the hooter sounds at Pipe at the end of the year.
Still, it’s a great position for me to be in and I’ll look to consolidate
with a solid result here at Jeffreys.”

Jbay was a bit smaller on the 2nd day of the contest for Round 2. The wave at this location tends to be faster when it is smaller. Jadson Andre, goofy footer, was having a difficult time keeping up with the wave in round 2. Sean Holmes was not surfing that intense but was consistent enough to beat out Jadson in
Heat 3 of Round 2. If you are on the west coast of the US, you will have to
tune into the contest at about 10:30pm to sync up with the contest in South
Africa.

The Trade Federation crew paddled at Trestles (Uppers) California on July 9th (and the days before that too). I happened to run into an ASP photographer, Rowland, who was a nice enough guy. Rowland indicated that he will be shooting at the upcoming World Tour Event at Trestles but is now working for Surfline. One of our bros dropped in on Rowland but it was one of those days (good swell and packed). Sorry bra. |

ASP 6-Star Event (Men)
|
|
|
|
The one world ranking system is in affect for the 2010 season. ASP
competitors combine results from World Tour Events (aka Dream Tour), Prime
Events, and Star Events to factor into the new ranking system. World
Tour Events are at the top, in terms of value toward the one world rank.
Prime Events hold the next highest value for ratings with Star Events
following. Star Events are rated from 1 to 6. Six being the
highest rated star event. In past years the Prime Events and Star
Events were classified as World Qualifying Series (WQS) events.

|
| Julian Wilson had to beat out the 2009 ASP North America Pro Junior
Series Champion, Nat Young, in order to win the 2010 Arugam Bay event.
Although Nat lost out to Julian in the finals, Nat came to surf. Nat
Young beat out former ASP Dream Tour campaigners Nic Muscroft and David
Weare to make his way to the finals. Nat spent time free surfing with
Kai Barger, Evan Geiselman, Dillon Perillo, and Mitch Crews in 2009 to help
refine his own style. |

| The waves were basically FIRING! In the Round of 48 Heat 6... ...Jadson Andre? Pulling off airs like it was a
habit.
And then... ..Whoa! Jadson again was throwing up multiple airs on a
single wave. Jadson wins his heat! In Heat 7 of the Round of 48,
Dane Reynolds mixed it up with John-John Florence and a few others to put on
an Air Force style show. Heat 7 produced a wide variety of surfing
maneuvers and was ultimately won by Blake Thornton. Damien
Hobgood, pictured above, was shooting some video of his brother`s heat (Heat
9). The final day of the
contest followed with Gabe Kling claiming victory over the ASP Prime
Event at Trestles 2010. |

Kelly Slater - Santa Catarina 2010 - ASP World Tour
|
|
|
|
| Kelly Slater won this contest in 2009. He had to
face an assertive Adriano De Souza, in the 2009 finals, before he could take
the trophy home. Imbituba, Santa Catarina hosted the action again in 2010. The 2010 contest revealed a bit of tension between Chris
Davidson and Daniel Ross during the 3rd Round. Chris Davidson splashed
Daniel Ross in the face when Daniel pressed him. In Heat 3 of Round 4
Dane Reynolds powered his way to victory. Dane faced Adriano De Souza
to put on an action packed heat. Before losing, Adriano busted two
airs on one wave. The webcast announcers and the contest judges were
not giving the wave as much credit but we recommend that you find the video
replay to see for yourself. Then the final day of the contest
followed. Jadson Andre? Pulling off airs like it was a reflex.
Jadson earned way into the finals where he went up against Kelly Slater.
And then... ..Uh Whoa! Jadson again was throwing up multiple airs on a
single wave. Jadson Wins! |

| On 4/13/2010, Al Hunt from ASP, announced changes to official terminology used by the
association. |
| |
|
In 2010, ASP has made changes to the way the male surfers qualify for and gain ranking points towards the ASP World Title.
The ASP World Tour and ASP World Qualifying Series (WQS) are no more as such, being combined in terms of rankings under the umbrella "ASP World Tour” banner, and distinguished through the “ASP World Title Race” and the “ASP World Rankings”.
The ASP World Title Race consists initially of 45 surfers fighting it out for points to decide the undisputed ASP World Champion. These 45 surfers all compete in the first five events of the year (Gold Coast, Bells Beach, Brazil, J-Bay and Tahiti) and then the Top 32 seeds move on into the second half of the year from Hurley Pro at Trestles to the Billabong Pro at Pipeline.
The surfer with the most points from just the ASP World Title Race events will be crowned the 2010 ASP Men’s World Champion.
|
| |
What happened to the ASP WQS?
The WQS has been replaced by a Star and PRIME events. Events range in progressive importance from 1-Star through 6-Star to PRIME.

| The contest director had to make tough decisions in the
face of unfavorable swell and conditions throughout the event window.
The event switched locations several times from Bells Beach to Thirteenth
Beach to Winkipop before it landed at
Johanna Beach for the finals. Although everyone involved
prefers good waves, it was interesting to see how the pros faired in poor to
average conditions. This part of the world has cold water forcing
competitors to wear full wetsuits. Each athlete had to reveal a bit more of their
Human-side. |

| With wave swell on the decline and not expected to pick
back up for at least a few days, ASP decided to run the remaining portions
of the event. It was probably the best decision for the sport and
the attention span of spectators. Being fired up for an event then
having to cool down for a week, until the finals, can be a drag. It also makes
it less-likely that fans can return for the LIVE webcast action. On the
flip side, you could see the drop in motivation by key competitors like Dane
Reynolds. |

In the end, the choppy mixed up waves best served the locals. Taj kept his
performance consistent and solid throughout the event. Taj beat out Jordy
